Map of Ghana and surrounding countries

In Ghana, many families raising children with disabilities face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, education, and opportunities within their communities. Stigma, limited awareness, and a lack of inclusive services can leave families feeling isolated and prevent children from reaching their full potential.

Family First Ghana believes that every child deserves to be valued, included, and supported to thrive. We work alongside families, communities, and local professionals to challenge stigma, improve access to essential services, and ensure children with disabilities have the opportunity to learn, grow, and participate fully in society.

Our approach is built around four stages of support, recognising that every family’s journey is unique. From early intervention and practical support, to building confidence, independence, and inclusive communities, we walk alongside families to help children and their families thrive.

1)    Intervention – Meeting each families unique needs

We believe early intervention is key to helping children reach their potential. Each family is supported to develop an individualised care plan based on their child's unique needs, strengths, and goals. Support may include access to medical care, therapeutic interventions, education, safe and accessible accommodation, specialist equipment, and nutritional support.

2)    Foundation - Building a network of support

We believe that families cannot thrive without a solid foundation of emotional and practical support. We offer emotional support to families and connect parents and caregivers with other families in similar circumstances across Kumasi, creating a community where families can share knowledge, encouragement, and support.

3)    Prevention - Empowering families

We aim to empower families with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to support their child's development. Through education about their child’s needs, support during medical appointments, and guidance around therapeutic interventions, families are equipped to help their children thrive in their own unique way.

4)    Education - Creating inclusive communities

The stigma surrounding disability and medical needs often isolates children and families. We work to challenge this stigma by providing training and awareness to healthcare providers, schools, churches, and communities. Through partnership and education, we dream of a Kumasi where children with disabilities are valued, included, and supported in every aspect of life.
